EPA 608 certification type finder
Which section 608 certification you need depends on the appliance, not your role. Type I covers small appliances, factory sealed with five pounds or less. Type II covers medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances other than small appliances and motor vehicle air conditioners. Type III covers low-pressure appliances. Universal is all three, and is earned by passing all of them.
If you work on more than one kind, answer for the broadest, then run the tool again for the others.
This reflects 40 CFR 82.161(a)(1) as retrieved on 22 September 2026. Servicing motor vehicle air conditioners for consideration is certified under 40 CFR part 82 subpart B, not section 608.
How this works
Every branch and outcome below is taken from 40 CFR 82.161(a)(1) and the appliance definitions at 82.152. The pressure classes are defined by liquid-phase saturation pressure at 104 degrees Fahrenheit: low is below 45 psia, medium 45 to 170 psia, high 170 to 355 psia, and very high above 355 psia or a critical temperature below 104 degrees. Note that EPA's own web page labels Type II "High-Pressure" while the regulation also places medium-pressure appliances there; this tool follows the regulation.
Worked examples
A technician servicing supermarket refrigeration racks using R-404A is working on a high-pressure appliance that is not a small appliance, so the answer is Type II. A technician who only pulls refrigerant from scrapped domestic fridges is disposing of small appliances, which 82.161(a)(1)(vii) exempts from certification altogether, although the recovery requirements in 82.156(b) still apply to the work.
