Built from the regulation, not from a prep vendor

The blueprint on this site is Appendix D to 40 CFR part 82 subpart F, section d, which fixes the test content in federal regulation: 25 items from Group I plus 25 from each relevant technical group. Section e fixes the passing score at 70 percent, and at 84 percent for a mail-in Type I. The regulation was retrieved through the eCFR versioner API at title 40 issue date 17 September 2026.

No fee and no time limit are published, because EPA does not set them

Appendix D says only that certifying programmes may charge reasonable fees, and it sets no time limit for the test. Both are decided by the EPA-approved organisation you test with. Rather than quote one vendor's price as though it were regulated, this site links to EPA's list of approved certifying programmes.

The certification does not expire

EPA states that Section 608 Technician Certification credentials do not expire. Section 82.161(a)(5) reserves the right to require recertification in future by notice in the Federal Register, and no such notice is in force. You must still keep a copy of the certificate at your place of business until three years after you stop working as a technician.

Type II covers medium pressure as well as high

EPA's website labels Type II as High-Pressure. Section 82.161(a)(1)(ii) is broader: it covers medium-, high- and very high-pressure appliances other than small appliances, MVACs and MVAC-like appliances. Where the plain-language page and the regulation differ, this site follows the regulation and says so.
